In 1977, White researcher Deirdre is pursuing a History Ph.D. at Georgetown, studying the history of lynchings in Maryland. She has come down to Southern Maryland to reconstruct the last lynching, which happened in 1933. What she learns will bring her into conflict with her 13year-old biracial son Kibuka, her Black voting rights activist lover Alex, and her racist White uncle Selby.
